What is Soft Rock Phosphate or Phosphorite?

It is a mineral composed mainly of phosphorus (P2O5). It is obtained from the crushing and/or grinding of phosphate rocks. It has applications in various industries, including agriculture, livestock, the chemical industry, etc.

For many years, some countries in Latin America have been known as a mining sector, where a large deposit of phosphate rock with a 22% to 30% phosphorus content is located. This high level of phosphorus is similar to that of phosphorus extracted from Morocco, which is the first listed worldwide. Due to its high quality, it provides excellent results in the production of phosphorite and derived products.

Nutriphos is now focusing on bringing this high quality, all natural, phosphorite to all markets and application. Contact us to find out more.

What is the Process?

Due to its nature, this mineral is found in the form of rock, known as phosphate rock, which is mined in the open air where it is extracted by backhoes, to be transported to the storage yards.

After being collected, the phosphate rock is introduced into a feed hopper to be processed in the primary crushing machine.

The crushing process reduces the phosphate rock from a large size, approximately 3 to 10 inches, to a small size approximately ¾ in size or even smaller (mesh 0). The rock passes through a separating sieve, classifying the phosphorite, returning the particles with larger dimensions to the crusher, which does not generate any type of waste since everything returns to the process.

Once the rock has been crushed, it is taken to the in-process product storage yard, where laboratory analyses are carried out to determine its purity and generate the quality certificate.

After analysis, the product is classified for storage in the finished product area.

Per customers request the phosphorite can be shipped in a finer granulometry, either 50 mesh up to 200 mesh.

Finally, the product is packed in 50-kilograms bags, 1 MT super bag or can be shipped in bulk. If a customer has a different packaging requirement, the Nutriphos’ team will evaluate it and determine feasibility.

Why fertilize with phosphorus?

Phosphorus is essential for life—and for thriving crops. It’s the backbone of:

  • Root development (stronger roots = drought-resistant plants).
  • Energy transfer (ATP production for growth and fruiting).
  • DNA synthesis (vital for plant reproduction and yield).
Without phosphorus, plants struggle to mature, flower, or produce nutrient-dense harvests.

For soils with low fertility and high lock-ups of phosphorus (low levels) due to factors such as acidity, high levels of iron, aluminum, and nutrient availability, is the major limitation for healthy growth of vegetables and plants.

In addition, low acidity and high aluminum levels can be corrected by using direct phosphate, which will allow for better use of nutrients for pastures and plants.

Rock Phosphate provides short-term phosphorus and sustains long-term soil health and crop growth.
